Are You Searching for Jobs the Right Way? Avoid Big Job Boards Like Indeed, Monster, and ZipRecruiter!
Using these sites can cause several problems but there are two main problems:
1. Out-dated Job Listings
The job boards scrape real job postings from other websites and list them on their site. But the truth is these boards copy job postings from other sites but don’t update them, so you could be looking at a job description that is weeks old and already filled. Or worse, the job is a scam.
2. Scam Job Listings
These big job boards not verify company profile and business information so a scam company can easily post fake jobs. When you upload your resume and job application to these websites, a scam company can gather and sell your data to third-party vendors. Yes, this even happens on LinkedIn sometimes!
How to Protect Yourself during a Job Search
1. Skip Big Job Boards – Use them to find job leads, but always verify directly on the company’s official website. It’s safer and shows you’re serious.
2. Apply Directly - Instead, applying on job boards, apply directly through the company website or given email on company website. This not only protects your information from scammers, it also makes you a more attractive candidate.
3. Don’t Share Your Full Address – On your resume, just include your city and state. This protects your privacy and avoids location bias.
4. Use a Job-Search Email Address – Create a new email just for your job hunt. This is helpful for many reasons:
· Protect your privacy from scammers,
· All job search-related correspondence is grouped in one spot, so you don’t lose important messages,
· It’s a branding opportunity - create an email address with [your name][ideal job title]@gmail.com. For example emilywordencareercoach@gmail.com or JaneSmithUX@Gmail.com.
5. Use a Google Voice Number – Instead of your real phone number, get a free Google Voice number. Calls can forward to your phone while keeping your real number private.
Stay safe and alert while job searching. Good luck! January is a great time to find new opportunities!
